2. Family TIPULIDAE

[Originally] By Pjotr Oosterbroek

Editor's Note: The original chapter included groups now split into separate families and treated as such in this online version: Limoniidae, Cylindrotomidae, and Pediciidae. The introduction below serves for all these families.

Although phylogenetically one of the most primitive families of Diptera, the Tipulidae is a very successful group comprising ca. 15,000 described species. The majority of the species were described by Alexander in over 1,000 publications. These publications have been indexed to keys, geographical area, and (sub)genera by Oosterbroek & Theowald (1980a,b). More than 2,100 species are known from the regions covered by this catalog.

As might be expected in a group of insects as large and diverse as the Tipulidae, a wide variety of habitats are occupied by the larvae and adults. But considering their popular familiarity as "daddy-longlegs", surprisingly little is known about the species of the Australasian/Oceanian Regions. Larval habitats include freshwater, especially rapidly flowing streams; intertidal zones or brackish waters; all kinds of semiaquatic environments; moss- and algae-covered steep cliffs, which are kept constantly wet; moist to wet cushions of mosses or liverworts; decaying wood or sodden logs in streams; leaf litter or mud such as that found along swamps, marshes, streams, and lakes; sandy or gravelly riversides; dry soils of pasturelands, lawns, steppe, and even deserts; fungi and mycelia; decaying plant materials or fruits in various stages of putrefaction; and leaves of terrestrial higher plants and mosses (mostly externally, rarely internally).

The life cycle of crane flies usually consists of a brief egg stage (1-2 weeks), 4 larval stages, and a short pupal stage (1-2 weeks) before emergence of the short-lived adult. Summer as well as winter diapause of certain stages is often noted and, depending on the species and the environmental conditions, the entire cycle may be as short as 6 weeks or as long as 6 years.

Tipulids are found from the northernmost Arctic lands to equatorial forests and from sea level to about 5,200 meters in elevation. They are usually associated with moist and temperate environments of forested or more open areas such as swamps, marshes, and meadows. Some species can be abundant in localized areas and are therefore of great ecological importance as food for a variety of animals. Larvae of a few species are destructive feeders on the subterranean parts of pasture grasses, seedlings, and crops and may sometimes cause severe commercial losses.

The earliest fossils of Tipulidae are found in Eocene and Oligocene sediments and amber (40-45 mya), but the family is supposedly much older: about mid-Mesozoic. In particular, the Baltic amber fauna can be considered rather diversified, comprising 2 extant genera of Tipulinae and 29 genera of Limoniinae, 25 of which are extant. Mid-Tertiary fossil finds have also yielded tipulid genera, some of which are extant.

An earlier version of this chapter is by Oosterbroek & Jonas (1986), which includes a species index for all the major islands and island groups, secondary references for the taxa listed, and more detailed information on type localities and distribution of species. Works omitted from Oosterbroek & Jonas (1986) are Alexander (1952), and Byers (1982, 1985).
