37. Family ASILIDAE

[Originally] by Greg Daniels

Within the regions covered here, Australia has the largest number of asilid species, with many found in hot, dry, inland areas. In humid coastal areas and islands to the north and east of Australia, members of the subfamily Laphriinae are most often encountered (esp. Laphria and Maira). The subfamily Dasypogoninae, common and widespread in Australia, is poorly represented elsewhere within the regions. Ommatius of the Asilinae may eventually be shown to be as abundant as the Laphriinae in these areas because recent collecting in northern Australia has yielded a very high proportion of undescribed species. Within Australia several other genera of Asilinae are abundant and widespread, but perhaps the most diversified genus, especially in inland areas, is Bathypogon. In mountain and coastal areas of southeastern Australia, Zosteria and numerous dasypogonine genera are dominant groups.

Over 500 species are known from these regions; however, the total is much closer to 1,000 when undescribed species are taken into consideration. New Guinea and most of the Pacific Islands have not had much systematic collecting, and numerous species await description. To some extent collecting has been somewhat sporadic within Australia. The fauna of the eastern states and the southwestern corner of Western Australia is fairly well known, but the northern and central areas have had little collecting.

Adults of some species can often be taken in certain preferred situations. Most species of Ommatius and some of Cerdistus and Neoitamus are only found perched on the end of twigs. Other species of the last two genera can be found only on tree trunks, grass stems, or bare, exposed rock. Species of Bathypogon rest in sunlit areas on the ground and, inland, are most often found resting upon bare, sandy soil exposed to full sun. Most species in the latter situation appear to prey almost exclusively upon grasshoppers. Many wasp-mimicking species of Dasypogoninae seem to prefer to perch on leaves of small trees or low shrubs.

Species synonymized by Ricardo and Hardy have not been recognized as such unless confirmed by more recent workers. The genera Dasypogon s. str. and Saropogon s. str. do not occur in the regions but, for purposes of this catalog, several species are retained in each until appropriate genera are described. The dasypogonine tribes Stenopogonini and Dasypogonini have also been retained here though there is growing evidence that the distinction between the two is not as clear-cut as was previously thought. Species of Aphestia are principally Neotropical, and it is probable that the single Australian species is not congeneric. Similarly, it is doubtful if Philodicus really occurs in Australia because the genus is essentially Afrotropical and Oriental. No recent material has been collected to confirm the existence of Philodicus in Australia. Moreover, J.E. Chainey (pers. comm.) considers that Philodicus canescens as a probable senior synonym of the Afrotropical P. alcimoides (Blasdale). The Asilidae Dasypogon scython Walker and Ommatius androcles Walker collected during Captain Beechy's travels to the Pacific and described by Walker as from "Sandwich Island" are errors, probably for an Asian locality such as Macao (see Oldroyd, 1964: 253).
