109. Family CALLIPHORIDAE
[Originally by] By Hiromu Kurahshi

Species of the family Calliphoridae, the so called blow flies, are usually large, metallic blue-green, and covered more or less with dusting, although a number of Australasian/Oceanian species are small to medium-sized and nonmetallic, sometimes testaceous yellow in part or entirely. Adults and larvae have broad habits in eubiocenoses, agrobiocenoses, and anthropobiocenoses, and occur in great numbers in almost every kind of natural habitat including human dwellings. Adults frequent vegetation, flowers, excrement, or decaying animal and plant matter. Some often enter buildings such as houses, shops, markets, and hospitals. Blow flies are of considerable importance in transmission of human diseases because of their breeding and feeding habits. Most of the Australasian/Oceanian blow fly species are larviparous (e.g., Ameniinae, Phumosiini, Onesia, Melinda, Polleniopsis, Tainanina, Dyscritomyia, and some subgenera of Calliphora),although oviparity is the rule in many other species. Larvae are omnivorous, carnivorous, or parasitic. They are known to be either primary scavengers feeding in carrion, feces, dung, and garbage, or parasites on insects, earthworms, snails, mammals, or other animals. A few species (Chrysomya rufifacies and Stomorhina discolor) are known to become predaceous and attack other dipteran larvae that feed in the same medium. Larvae of Bengalia and most Rhiniinae seem to be primary predators of ants, wasps, and termites. Some species are of particular medical and veterinary importance. Chrysomya bezziana, the Old World screwworm fly, causes myiasis in man and domestic animals in New Guinea; Lucilia cuprina, L. sericata, and Calliphora stygia infest sheep in the arid environment of Australia and New Zealand.

Six subfamilies are recognized from the regions covered here. The Calliphorinae are heterogenous. I follow Senior-White et al. (1940) and Zumpt (1956) in including the genera Anthracomyia, Dexopollenia, and Pollenia in this subfamily; they are given tribal status. Lucilia cuprina, L. sericata, Calliphora vicina, C. vomitoria, and Rhinia apicalis are found throughout a large part of the world. These widespread species were either accidentally introduced or migrated into Australasian/Oceanian areas from the Northern Hemisphere. On the other hand, there are many species quite narrowly restricted in their distribution in the Australasian/Oceanian Regions. Dyscritomyia is an endemic luciliine group well differentiated in the Hawaiian Islands comprising 25 species. Other islands in the Pacific often include some endemic species among the common ones in the fauna. Euphumosia, which comprises nearly 33 species, is found nowhere else in the world. Lucilia vittata Macquart was originally described from "Nouvelle-Hollande" but in error, as this species is actually Neotropical (see Dear 1985).
