80. Family CARNIDAE

by Curtis W. Sabrosky

This small family formerly included the peculiar genus Australimyza, treated here as a distinct family, Australimyzidae. A lone specimen of the carnid genus Meoneura, in the Malloch Collection, lacks locality data but is presumed to be from New Zealand because it had been identified by Hutton and by Tonnoir. Hutton labeled the specimen "Borborus empiricus Hut." now in Leptocera (Sphaeroceridae). Tonnoir labeled it "Agromyzidae genus?", and Malloch labeled it "Meoneura vagans Fallén" (although it appears nearer M. obscurella Fallén). The genus Meoneura, often associated with carrion or excrement, is chiefly Holarctic, and the specimen was probably introduced.
