Chironomidae (nonbiting midges) are distributed from the Arctic to the
Antarctic and from the seas to permanent montane snowfields. Larvae are
important in biomass and species diversity in aquatic biotopes, from the
most pristine to the most polluted. Several species are semiterrestrial,
some fully terrestrial (even in cow dung); and are among the dominant insects
in the intertidal zone of marine shores, with Pontomyia truly marine.
Adult midges are short-lived, but large aerial mating swarms may occur (e.g.,
Chironomus duplex and Polypedilum nubifer in Australia). Elsewhere
such nuisance midges can cause allergic reactions in exposed humans (Cranston
et al. 1984), and this has recently been reported for "Chironomus"
longilobus and Tanytarsus barbitarsis at Dampier in Western
Australia.
The major taxonomic works on the Chironomidae of the regions covered here
are those of Freeman (1959, New Zealand; 1961, Australia) and Tokunaga (1964a,
Micronesia). These works consider only adults; however, current chironomid
systematics depends upon integration of morphological features from all
life history stages. The great accumulation of knowledge of the metamorphosis
of Northern Hemisphere species has led to a modern holomorphological generic
concept strongly biased towards Holarctic taxa. We have attempted to place
all species in currently accepted genera by using reared material where
possible or by reexamining adults using new characters. However, in many
genera apparently restricted to Australasia, or at least to the austral
continents, the immature stages are still unknown. The discovery of larvae
and pupae belonging to species currently known only from the adults may
result in reassessment of generic classifications.
An additional source of taxonomic instability is the undoubted existence
of many undescribed species and genera in the regions covered here. Virtually
all regional ecological studies of aquatic biotopes, especially lotic systems,
reveal a substantial number of undescribed larval chironomids. This is particularly
true of western Australia (D.H. Edward, pers. comm.), Queensland, and New
Zealand, where rearing to pupae and adults confirms the novelty of the fauna.
The cataloged regional fauna contains 469 valid species in 115 genera and
7 subfamilies. Worldwide there are about 5,000 described valid species of
Chironomidae in 330 genera and 10 subfamilies. Several genera are included
in this catalog without named species; these are mostly based on recognition
of larval characters. Subfamilies are listed in postulated phylogenetic
sequence. Tribes (where recognized) are listed in phylogenetic sequence.
