22. Family CULICIDAE

[Originally] By Neal L. Evenhuis & Samuel M. Gon III

Culicids, or mosquitoes, are represented in the Australasian/ Oceanian Regions by the 3 known subfamilies (Anophelinae, Toxorhynchitinae, and Culicinae) comprising over 600 valid species and subspecies in almost 70 genera and subgenera.

Adult females of most species are obligate blood feeders and play an important medico-veterinary role as transmitters of various diseases, while others are important biting pests. In the Australasian/Oceanian Regions certain species are known to transmit malaria, filariasis, and viral diseases such as dengue and encephalitis. In contrast, adults of Toxorhynchites are nonbiting. Their larvae are predaceous on other aquatic invertebrates (Steffan & Evenhuis 1981) and some species have been introduced onto Pacific islands such as Hawaii and Tahiti for biological control of culicine mosquitoes.

Larvae and pupae of culicids are aquatic, occupying standing or slow-moving waters under conditions ranging from temporary accumulations of water held by plants, tires, cans, and other containers, to vast estuarine wetlands. Because of the medical importance of the family, a large body of literature exists regarding the natural history, epidemiological role, and control of many of the species.
