The Fanniidae are a small, primitive group of Calyptratae, largely confined
to the Holarctic and temperate Neotropical regions. There are some 265 species
in 4 genera, with very few species in the Afrotropical (11), Oriental (29),
and Australasian (14) regions.
Adults are medium-sized to small species and are often mainly dark in body
and leg color. Males congregate in characteristic dancing swarms beneath
trees; females are more retiring in habit and are collected by sweeping
vegetation. Larvae are characterized by their flattened bodies with striking
lateral protuberances, and live as scavengers in various kinds of decaying
organic matter.
