107. Family MUSCIDAE
[Oroiginally by] By Adrian C. Pont

The Muscidae are well represented in all zoogeographic regions, and some 3,880 species are recognized. This catalog lists 728 species in 52 genera, totaling almost 910 names, but work on the Australasian/Oceanian fauna is incomplete and these regions are likely to contain at least 1,000 species.

Adults occur in virtually all habitats except the most arid and are often extremely numerous. Some are of considerable medico-veterinary importance (Stomoxyinae, many Muscinae) and, as blood or sweat feeders, are able to act as mechanical vectors of diseases. However, most species are retiring of habit and have little impact on human activities. Adult Coenosiinae are predators of other insects. Larval habitats and larval food vary widely, including saprophagy, phytophagy, coprophagy, carnivory, and parasitism, but larvae are most commonly found in dung or decaying organic matter. Larvae of Atherigona (shoot flies) are primary pests of cereal crops and grasses.

The generic classification of the Muscidae was dealt with by Hennig (1965) and, for the Mydaeinae, by Vockeroth (1972). There is a valuable paper on dung-breeding larvae by Ferrar (1979) and a general account of world muscid larvae by Skidmore (1985). There is little synoptic literature available for the adults. Identification of genera may be attempted using the keys in Emden (1965) and Malloch (1925f); keys to the genera of the Mydaeinae are given by Vockeroth (1972) and to the Coenosiini by Crosskey (1962b). Individual revisions are available for the Mydaeinae (Vockeroth 1972), Passeromyia (Pont 1974a), Pectiniseta (Pont 1972), and Pygophora (Crosskey 1962b). Otherwise, the following treatments are most useful for individual areas: Australia (Malloch passim; Pont passim; ), Fiji (Bezzi 1928), Hawaii (Hardy 1981), Lord Howe and Norfolk islands (Pont 1973), Maluku (Malloch 1929c,d), Marquesas (Malloch 1932o), Micronesia (Snyder 1965), PNG (Shinonaga & Pont, 1988; Shinonaga & Kano, passim), and Samoa (Malloch 1929g). A revision of the New Zealand Muscidae is in preparation by R.A. Harrison.
