Superfamily PSYCHODOIDEA
15. Family PSYCHODIDAE

[originally] by D.A. Duckhouse
(Bruchomyiinae, Trichomyiinae, Sycoracinae, Psychodinae)

& the late D. J. Lewis
(Phlebotominae)

Adult psychodids (moth flies) are mostly short-legged, weak-flying insects encountered in permanently moist places, especially forests. Larvae feed on fallen leaves and other organic materials. Through their frequent abundance they play an important ecological role in accelerating the release of nutrients. Some species of the subfamily Phlebotominae transmit diseases (Adler & Theodor 1957, Lewis 1971). The family is also notable in that it includes some of the most primitive Diptera.

There are numerous Australasian species, mostly undescribed. An idea of the extent of the fauna is provided by Quate & Quate's (1967) observation that the 228 species recorded from the Papuan Subregion may represent no more than 25% of the actual fauna. In contrast, and despite far more intensive collecting, the entire western Palearctic fauna only includes some 457 described species.

Of the 5 subfamilies, Bruchomyiinae are most plesiomorphic. In other regions they are often collected with Phlebotominae; study of the immature stages of Bruchomyia argentina (Satchell 1953a) suggests a sister-group relationship between these 2 subfamilies.

Phlebotominae (phlebotomine sand flies) are characteristically encountered in dry areas, breeding in leaf litter or moist fissures in the soil. In some regions the blood-sucking females transmit protozoan parasites (Leishmania), bacteria, or viruses. Of the 2 genera in Australasia, Phlebotomus is believed to usually feed on mammals (but see Lewis & Dyce, 1982: 53) and Sergentomyia on reptiles. A curious feature of the distribution of phlebotomines is that they seem to be absent from most oceanic islands (Lewis 1978, Quate 1959a). Indeed, there are no records from any part of the vast expanse of Oceania, including New Zealand.

Sycoracinae are mostly rare. Females are blood-sucking like those of Phlebotominae [Sycorax silacea feeds on frogs (Desportes 1942)] but are not known to bite humans or domestic animals. Larvae may occur in the freshwater marginal zone, but some New Zealand species are fully terrestrial.

Trichomyiinae are associated with rotting wood: the larva of Trichomyia urbica Haliday is xylophagous (Keilin & Tate 1937), Trichomyia crucis has been reared from wet, rotting, woody material contained in treeholes and hollows between buttress roots, and adults of other species tend to be concentrated where there is abundant rotting wood. There are more described species in Australasia than in any other region.

By far the largest and most apomorphic subfamily is the Psychodinae. Many Australasian species of Psychodinae broadly resemble Pericoma and were described as members of that genus. None truly belong there. In this catalog 9 species have been transferred to Didicrum. The remainder are left in Pericoma pending the publication of several new genera to accommodate them.

Immatures of Australasian Psychodinae resemble those of European species described by Satchell (1947, 1949) and Vaillant (1971-1983) and range from fully terrestrial to almost fully aquatic. Didicrum and Notiocharis are close to Pericoma in structure and habits; Peripsychoda larvae are elongate mud-burrowing forms, precisely like their European counterparts (Duckhouse 1966); Brunettia has a semiterrestrial larva very similar to Clytocerus (Duckhouse 1966); Telmatoscopus includes setose larvae and others with strongly reduced setae and tergal plates. Clogmia breeds in water-filled tree holes.

The Australasian fauna includes an important Antarctic element related genealogically to species in the neotropics and, to a lesser extent, the afrotropics (Didicrum; Trichomyia subg. Gondwanotrichomyia). The New Zealand fauna includes elements that are particularly close to some in the neotropics. It is also closest to that of the southern neotropics in overall composition because it lacks a series of genera that apparently entered Australia and New Guinea from the Oriental Region: Phlebotomus, Sergentomyia, Notiocharis, Trichopsychoda, Telmatoscopus, and Paratelmatoscopus (Duckhouse 1966). The Oceanian fauna apparently does not include any Antarctic elements and mainly comprises taxa that are more dispersive, especially Psychoda.

The known Australasian/Oceanian fauna includes 21 genera and 433 species, versus 20 genera and 315 species in the Oriental Region and 22 genera and 256 species in the Afrotropical Region. Only 1 of the recorded genera (5.3%) is endemic, compared with none in the Oriental, 4 (18.2%) in the Afrotropical, and more than 14 (53.8%) in the Neotropical regions.
