65. Family PYRGOTIDAE

By Brian R. Pitkin

There are about 330 species and 50 genera of Pyrgotidae worldwide with over one-third of these from the Afrotropical Region. Three subfamilies [Lochmostyliinae, Pyrgotinae, and Toxurinae (= Paratoxurinae)] are currently recognized, but thorough morphological study of the genera is needed before interrelationships of these 3 can be understood. There are 73 species in 17 genera recorded from the Australasian/Oceanian Regions.

The biology of only a few species is known. The larvae are internal parasitoids of Coleoptera and Hymenoptera. The adults are mainly nocturnal and are most easily caught using light traps, but adults of Prodalmannia visit flowers by day.
