112. Family SARCOPHAGIDAE

[Originally] by Hugo de Souza Lopes

Editorial Note: This web version of the Sarcophagidae chapter of the the Australasian/Oceanian Regions follows the recent world catalog of Sarcophagidae (Pape, 1996). The classification and generic concepts shown here are much different than what was originally published by Lopes in 1989. The original introductory paragraphs below have not been altered to reflect the current changes.

The Sarcophagidae of the Australasian/Oceanian Regions are represented by 3 subfamilies: Miltogrammatinae, Paramacronychiinae and Sarcophaginae. The poorly known Miltogrammatinae are represented by 8 genera; some of the 13 species were reared from nests of Hymenoptera. Members of the subfamily Paramacronychiinae, with only 2 species in the genus Goniophyto, often inhabit strand habitats.

The Sarcophaginae, with 125 species, is divided into 6 tribes: Sarothromyiini, Protodexiini, Impariini, Raviniini, Sarcophagini, and Sarcodexiini. All species of Sarothromyiini, Impariini, Raviniini, and Sarcodexiini have been introduced from the New World. Ravinia lherminieri was found in the Hawaiian Islands in 1863, but all other species seem to have been introduced more recently. Chaetoravinia anandra is a parthenogenetic species. Species of Blaesoxipha are quite similar to those of the Oriental and Palearctic regions. The genera and subgenera Bercaea, Jantia, Liopygia, and Thomsonea are each represented by a single more or less cosmopolitan species. Ten genera are restricted to the Australasian/Oceanian Regions. The Sarcophaga subgenera Sarcosolomonia (19 spp.) and Sarcorohdendorfia (32 spp.) are represented also in the Oriental Region but by few species. Members of the subgenus Seniorwhitea, with a single species in the Australasian/Oceanian Regions, are commonly found throughout the Oriental Region. Parasarcophaga is also very common in the Oriental Region, extending to the Palearctic. Liosarcophaga, with a large number of species in the Palearctic and Oriental regions, is represented by only 8 species in the Australasian/Oceanian Regions. Most species breed in decaying organic matter, but Baranovisca was reared from spider egg sacs.

The papers of T.H. Johnston, J.R. Malloch, O.W. Tiegs, and G.H. Hardy are the most important ones from 1921 to 1943 and represent the basis of the taxonomic work of the regions.

The manuscript benefitted from the comments and suggestions of Thomas Pape, who added new distributional information and taxonomic changes based on examinations of Fallén and Wiedemann types.
