The cosmopolitan family Tachinidae is one of the largest families of
Diptera, if not the largest. Recent catalogs now exist for all zoogeographic
regions and place the world fauna at ca. 8,200 species. The almost 850 Australasian/Oceanian species in this catalog compare with 1,281 Nearctic species (Sabrosky &
Arnaud 1965), 2,864 Neotropical species (Guimarães 1971), 725 Oriental
species (Crosskey 1977b), ca. 1,000 Afrotropical species (Crosskey 1980),
and 1,552 Palearctic species (Herting 1984).
Tachinid adults are extremely diverse in appearance and many do not have
the typical gray-black, bristly facies (e.g., some are elongate and only
sparsely bristled, a few nocturnal forms have pallid coloration, and others
hardly look like calyptrates at all). All Tachinidae, however, share the
parasitoid habit, and almost without exception their larvae are endoparasites
in other insects. Thus, despite their diverse appearance, species of Tachinidae
are biologically discrete. The majority parasitize either larvae of Lepidoptera
or larvae or adults of Coleoptera, but others attack adults of Hemiptera
(Heteroptera), larvae of Hymenoptera (sawflies and social Vespoidea), or
adults of various orthopteroid orders. Tachinid parasitism of other Diptera
is rare, as are hosts in other groups of Arthropoda (e.g., centipedes).
The Rhinophoridae, a group sometimes included as a subfamily in Tachinidae are parasites of woodlice (Isopoda) and are unknown from the Australasian/Oceanian
Regions (Crosskey 1977a).
Few if any tachinids are known to be host species-specific although hosts
of the Phasiinae are virtually limited to Hemiptera and those of the Dexiinae
to beetle larvae. On the other hand some species of Goniinae will use hosts
in 2 or 3 different insect orders. Many Tachinidae are parasites of important
pests of agricultural crops or forest trees and, as such, have potential
for use as parasitoids in integrated control programs. A small number of
species have successfully been used as classical biological control agents;
however, some tachinids are not always so obliging and many attempts at
biological control using tachinids have failed dismally. Tachinids have
evolved 4 main methods of infecting their hosts. Oviparous species stick
large (macrotype) eggs directly on the host, but the more advanced micro-oviparous
species deposit minute (microtype) eggs on foliage of host food plants to
be ingested by the host as it feeds. Larviparous species retain their eggs
until maturity and these hatch as soon as they are laid, on or near their
hosts; some of these 1st instars are almost perfect planidia. Females of
some species that attack bugs and adult beetles have piercing ovipositors,
clasping mechanisms, or both, to facilitate parasitization of their hosts.
Adult flies can be found in almost all habitats resting on foliage, feeding
at flowers or, in the case of females, flying quietly in search of hosts.
Males may be seen resting on larger tree trunks, which they leave to intercept
passing insects before returning rapidly. Smaller species may be collected
by sweeping low vegetation.
The family presents numerous taxonomic difficulties. It is generally regarded
as a relatively recent, actively radiating family, and the very large number
of species it contains can often only be separated by rather intangible
characters. Accurate, concise definitions at suprageneric levels are particularly
difficult to derive because of the diversity of the taxa they must contain,
and the higher classification is therefore not fully agreed upon among specialists.
Most existing classifications were produced largely using external characters
of the adult flies, but these are being improved by recent authors incorporating
new knowledge of reproductive habit, immature stages, and biology. When
fully worked out, a more natural classification should result. Four subfamilies
(Phasiinae, Dexiinae, Tachininae, and Goniinae) are present in the Australasian/Oceanian
Regions. The Dexiinae are notably absent from New Zealand. The status of
an additional subfamily, Dufouriinae, is still being debated, with some
authors placing the genera it contains in Dexiinae. Cantrell (1984b) recorded
species of this group (as Dufouriinae) from southern Australia, but because
no species are described they are not listed in this catalog. Two species, Gymnostylia quadrimaculata Macquart and Jurinia australis Macquart, have been removed from the Australasian/Oceanian faunal listings.
They were described in error from Irian Jaya and "Nouvelle-Hollande,"
respectively (see Crosskey, 1971: 271, 273).
The fauna of Australia contains a relatively high proportion of endemic
genera (ca. 41%), occurring mainly in the southern parts of the continent.
In the north this is supplemented by Oriental genera including some found
throughout the Old World. The fauna of New Guinea and the Pacific Islands
is also Oriental in character, but there is a uniquely distinctive fauna
in the New Zealand Subregion. Discussion of the composition of the tachinid
fauna of these regions could not be complete without reference to the great
development of the dexiine tribe Rutiliini. Species of Rutiliini are among
the largest and most striking of Tachinidae, many having brilliant metallic
coloration and/or attractive patterns of pollinosity. The tribe is virtually
restricted to these regions, with only a short extension into the Oriental
Region and has no faunal counterpart elsewhere; the group was monographed
by Crosskey (1973a).
As implied above, authors' opinions of the correct tribal compositions of
the Tachininae and Goniinae vary widely, but most agree that the Tachininae,
as generally accepted and used in this catalog, is polyphyletic. The present
state of knowledge does not allow any meaningful rearrangement. The development
of the micro-oviparous reproductive habit in the Goniinae (Exoristinae sensu
Herting) is widely regarded as apomorphic. Herting (1960) was one of the
first authors to propose that all micro-oviparous species be united in a
single tribe, Goniini, with oviparous and ovolarviparous species formerly
contained in the Carceliini, Sturmiini, and Eryciini merged in a reconstituted
Eryciini; he formally adopted this proposal in his (1984) Palearctic catalog.
This recommendation has not been followed in the present catalog, where
a more conservative classification has been used. The Australasian/Oceanian
fauna has not been fully investigated with regard to reproductive habit
and, until this is completed, it is premature to follow Herting's arrangement.
Herting (1984) also transferred Siphonini to the Tachininae, but they are
retained here in Goniinae.
Finally, it should be stressed that this catalog does not do justice to
the total tachinid fauna of the regions because, by and large, the fauna
is poorly known and poorly collected. Difficulty of access to some remote
areas has hindered the acquisition of specimens, and tachinids are still
unknown from many of the smaller island groups and coral atolls. In the
New Zealand Subregion tachinids are unknown in the Kermadec, Campbell, Macquarie,
and Auckland islands but are present in the Chatham Islands. It is difficult
to estimate how many species remain to be discovered, but it seems likely
that the total may easily double when the fauna is fully documented. From
what is known, it is undoubtedly a rich and varied fauna.
