Tephritidae is a large family of predominantly picture-winged,
usually highly ornamented flies with brightly contrasting color
patterns on the bodies. Over 6,200 species are known
worldwide. This catalog lists 829 species in 150 genera. Fruit flies of most of the world's tropics are still
poorly known, and comparatively little biological data or host
information are available for most of the fauna. There is no universal
agreement on the higher classification of the family on a worldwide
basis. For this catalog we prefer to arrange the genera in 3 subfamilies:
Dacinae, Trypetinae, and Tephritinae.
Although members of this family are commonly called fruit flies,
the vast majority of the world's species are not frugivorous.
Species of the subfamily Dacinae are exclusively fruit breeders
and attack all kinds of fleshy fruits, including those of cucurbitaceous
and solanaceous crops, and members of the genus Dacus s.
l. comprise the major economic pests of this region. Except for
some genera of fruit-breeding Trypetinae, the non-dacine Tephritidae
breed predominantly in various tissues of living plants. Tephritinae
breed predominantly in flower heads of Compositae (Asteraceae),
and some are gall formers and stem borers in Compositae, Goodenaceae,
and some other plant families. The Trypetinae have a wide range
of biological associations: some are fruit breeders (largely in
native and endemic hosts) and are seldom economically important
in these regions, some are leaf miners; some infest flower heads
(feeding on seeds and ovaries); some breed in buds of large flowers
such as Bauhinia, Bombax, and Hibiscus; many
of the Acanthonevrini, especially Gastrozonina, are associated
with bamboo, with some boring in the young shoots, others in the
terminal growths. Some Trypetinae show a marked departure from
the usual breeding habits of the family: Termitorioxa Hendel
has been reared from galleries of Mastotermes in northern
Australia (Hill, 1921); Phytalmiini apparently breed in rotting
bark or wood; species of Dirioxa have been reared from decaying
fruit and rotting bark of mahogany trees (Dysoxylum) in
northern Queensland (1 species of Dirioxa has been reared from
decaying wood); Dacopsis breeds in thick stringy bark of
fallen Dysoxylum trees in Papua New Guinea; and some species
of Themara have been collected commonly on trunks of fallen
trees and may be bark breeders. The strangest association known
for a "fruit fly" is that of Alloeomyia flavida
from Papua New Guinea, which has been collected only in traps
baited with human feces; no doubt it is a scavenger.
