Hawaiian Coots recorded per party hr on the Waipi'o
Christmas Count, 1977-2007
(see Count
Page), showing a declining
trend, opposite to that of the Kapa'a Christmas Count. These trends
may relate to local wetland conditions and/or
increased emigration of birds from Kaua'i to O'ahu.
Fluctuations in numbers apart
from the trends reflect favorable and unfavorable
conditions for breeding, as related
primarily to rainfall totals (see also Common Moorhen and Hawaiian Stilt).
