Hawaiian Coots recorded per party hr on the Kapa'a Christmas Count, 1971-2014
(see Count
Page), showing a declining trend from
the 1970s to 2000 followed by an increase from 2005 to 2014. Fluctuations
in numbers apart from the trends reflect favorable and unfavorable
conditions for breeding, as related primarily to rainfall totals (see also Common Moorhen and Hawaiian Stilt).
