The male and female `amakihi differ in color. The male is a brilliant yellow-green while the female is darker olive-green. It is most common in native forests above 2,000 feet. It frequents leafy branches of forest trees and other plants where it feeds on insects. It is often seen taking nectar when flowers are abundant. Four distinct subspecies of `amakihi are recognized:

Kauai `Amakihi: Hemignathus virens stejnegeri
- Hawaii `Amakihi: Hemignathus virens virens
- Oahu `Amakihi: Hemignathus virens chloris
- Maui `Amakihi: Hemignatrhus virens wilsoni (found on Maui, Lanai, and Molokai).
