With its long, curved bill, the `i`iwi sips nectar from flowers high in the forest canopy, especially `ohia, and from curved flowers in the forest understory. `I`iwi feathers were used extensively in Hawaiian capes and featherwork and it was referred to in ancient Hawaiian chants.
