Aided by captive breeding programs, the endangered nene, or Hawaiian goose, has grown in numbers from fewer than 25 individuals known only from the Island of Hawaii to the lower hundreds on three islands. It is found in scrubland, grassland, and sparsely vegetated slopes. It feeds on a variety of native and introduced plants.
