Usually found in pools along overflow channels bordering perennial streams, usually in areas with thick surrounding vegetation (Polhemus & Asquith 1996). Historically known to breed in stagnant ponds, it prefers quiet pools away from the main channels. Presently known only from 6 populations on 2 islands (Maui, Molokai). Extensive surveys of virtually all stream systems in the Hawaiian Islands during the past 5 years have established this information (D. Polhemus, personal communication).
