Phase I of the Fiji Terrestrial Arthropod Survey was a two-year survey of selected biodiverse arthropods occurring in the Fiji Islands. The project has 5 primary parts.

  • surveys, which include various trapping methods;
  • training of in-country personnel to assist with sorting and identification of selected arthropods;
  • upgrading an insect facility in Suva to help create and maintain the Fiji National Insect Collection (FNIC) there through staffing, supplies, and voucher specimens;
  • publication results of the project; and
  • publication and online availability of a checklist and bibliography of Fijian Arthropods

Phase II is pending funding and will complete surveying the Fiji Archipelago by sampling biodiverse areas on Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, and Taveuni, and concetrate on the Lomaiviti and Southern Laus. In the meantime, we continue to study the material already collected, publish results in Fiji Arthropods, and continually update the Fiji checklists. See progress below.
