Family PROTOPLECIIDAE


The Protopleciidae were originally proposed for the genera Protoplecia Handlirsch, Mesoplecia Rohdendorf, and Mesopleciella Rohdendorf. Kovalev (1987) revised the generic composition by transferring genera from Pleciofungivoridae to this family. Blagoderov (in press) has since sunk the families Palaeopleciidae and Protoligoneuridae under this family and transferred their genera (Palaeoplecia Rohdendorf and Protoligoneura Rohdendorf) to here. Fourteen species of the pleciofungivorid genus Rhaetofungivora Rohdendorf were transferred to this family by Kovalev (1987), but he failed to assign them to any genus. Eleven of these have since been transferred to other genera by Blagoderov (in press). The remainder of them are listed here under unplaced species. In addition to the taxa listed below, Kovalev (1990) recorded and illustrated an undetermined specimen of this family from the Jurassic of Transbaikalia.

Crosskey (1988) placed Simulidium priscum in this family. However, the type specimen cannot be found (A. Borkent, in litt.) and its placement here can only be considered provisional until further study can be conducted on this enigmatic taxon to verify its placement.
