Members of the family Protorhyphidae are known only from extinct
taxa. The family was based originally on the genus Protorhyphus
Handlirsch from Lower Jurassic deposits of Germany. Subsequently,
four more genera have been added to the family, all from the Jurassic.
Rohdendorf (1964) placed the family between the Oligophrynidae
and Olbiogastridae (both considered here in the family Anisopodidae)
of his Superfamily Rhyphidea.
In addition to the determined forms listed below, Jarzembowski
(1978) mentioned an undetermined specimen from the Lower Jurassic
of Britain that may belong to this family.
