Protoscatopsidae was originally proposed by Rohdendorf (1946) for the single
genus Protoscatopse Rohdendorf. Kalugina & Kovalev (1985) added
the genus Mesoscatopse Kovalev. Both are known only from the Lower
to Middle Jurassic deposits of Asia. Rohdendorf (1964) placed the family
in his Superfamily Scatopsidea.
