Trichoceridae, commonly called winter crane flies, can be
seen on mild winter days swarming in sylvan habitats, although
they also occur in spring and fall months. Adults inhabit dark,
moist areas such as caves, cellars, and hollow trees. Larvae are
known to feed on decaying plant matter in moist terrestrial situations.
Extant forms number about 100 species. Fourteen species in 5 genera
of fossil and amber trichocerids are recorded in this catalog.
The species Limnobia jaccardi Heer was transferred to
Trichocera by Scudder (1894); however, Edwards (1928: 32)
considered it closer to the genus Diazosma Bergroth unless
it was shown to be a tipulid. It is treated here as unplaced in
Trichoceridae until such time as the type specimen can be reexamined.
