The taxa listed below could not be placed with certainty in any existing
family, but have characters consistent with nematocerous flies. It is strongly
recommended that type specimens of all the taxa listed here be reexamined
to determine their placement within the Diptera.
In addition to the described taxa listed below, an undescribed and unplaced
specimen of Culicomorpha from the Jurassic Solnhofen Formation of Germany
was recorded and pictured by Ponomarenko (1985: 137, 140), material from
the Eocene Arkansas amber were recorded by Saunders et al. (1974: 983),
and numerous specimens of nematocerous larvae, pupae, and adults are recorded
and figured from the Cretaceous limestone deposits of Nagpur, India by George
(1952). The last records appear to be Chironomidae, but any conclusion as
to familial placement can only be made after restudy of the fossils.
