Status: Endangered

Distribution: Kona side of the Big Island

Once common throughout the lowland forests of Kona on the Big Island, the `alala is now known from only a handful of individuals that have been bred in captivity to keep it from going extinct. It feeds on fruits, especially those of the `ie`ie, but is otherwise an opportunistic feeder. diseases and hunting to keep it from eating crops may have led to its reduced numbers.
