66. Kaua‘i Cave Amphipod

Scientific name: Spelaeorchestia koloana

Hawaiian name: ‘uku noho ana

Classification: Phylum: Arthropoda. Class: Amphipoda. Family: Talitridae.

Origin: Endemic.

Status: Endangered.

Distribution: Kaua‘i.

This small sand hopper is found only in a few caves on Kaua‘i and is considered federally Endangered. it is Hawaii's first endangerd arthropod. it feeds on the organic debris of decomposing plants in the caves. Its small populations are currently under threat by potential deveopment of golf courses and houses that will ultimately destroy the caves systems underneath.
