Scientific name: Clermontia lindseyana

Hawaiian Name: ‘Oha wai

Classification: Phylum: Dicotyleodonae. Family: Campanulaceae.

Origin: Endemic.

Status: Endangered.

Distribution: Mauna Kea on the Big Island and East Maui.

Thisd tall, branching tree is remarkable in having curved flowers that are pollinated by nectar-feeding honeycreepers like the ‘i‘iwi. the flowers of this species are among the largest in the genus. only about 15 plants remain on the slopes of Mauna Kea on the Big Island and about 300+ on East Maui.

 

It is threatened by cattle, goat, and pig damage and rats eating the fruits and flowers.
