Hawaiian Name: Hoa

Classification: Phylum: Chordata. Class: Aves.

Map: --

This Moloka‘i honeycreeper was discovered in 1893 and was given the name funerea by its discoverer, R.C.L. Perkins, because of its somber plumage and because he did not think it would survive long. He was right -- the last black mamo was seen just 14 years later, in 1907.

Perkins observed sticky yellow pollen on the foreheads of the Balck mamo and concluded that they must have fed on the yellow lobeliad flowers in the area.
