This Moloka`i honeycreeper was discovered in 1893 and was given the name funerea by the discoverer, R.C.L. Perkins, because hge did not think it would survive long. He was right - the last one was seen just fourteen years later, in 1907. Perkins observed sticky yellow pollen on their foreheads and concluded that they must have fed on the yellow lobelias in the area.
