Common Guava / kuawa
Scientific name: Psidium guajava Classification: Phylum: Plantae. Class: Dicotyledonae. Family: Myrtaceae Origin: Introduced Status: Common Distribution:All the main islands Sound file: -- Map: -- This tree was introduced into Hawaii in the early 1800s for its fruit. Unfortunately, it thrives in this climate and out-competes other native plants and trees in our forests. It can grow into almost impenetrable thickets and is considered now a noxious weed. Successful efforts to rid areas of this tree have shown that native species of plants do return. |
