This tree was introduced into Hawai‘i in the early 1800s for its fruit. Unfortunately, it thrives in this climate and out-competes other native plants and trees in our forests. It can grow into almost impenetrable thickets and is considered now a noxious weed. Successful efforts to rid areas of this tree have shown that native species of plants do return.
