Hawaiian Name: ‘ainohu kauo

Classification: Phylum: Chordata. Class: Aves.

Origin: Endemic.

Status: Reduced populations.

Distribution: Laysan Island, Pearl & Hermes.

The Laysan Finch is common on Laysan Island in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. A small purposefully translocated population exists on Pearl & Hermes Reef. It is omnivorous, eating carrion, various invertebrates, seeds, roots, and seabird eggs. They are curious and have no fear of humans.
