Scientific name: Acrocephalus familiaris kingi

Classification: Phylum: Chordata. Class: Aves

Origin: Endemic (at the subspecies level).

Status: Endangered; 300-700 individuals surviving

Distribution: Nihoa.

This little bird is found only on the remote island of Nihoa in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. It was placed on the Federal Endangered List in 1967. A similar form on Laysan Island went extinct somewhere between 1916 and 1923 when introduced rabbits destroyed that island's vegetation.

The Nihoa Millerbird spends most of its time near the ground foraging for insects. the single known population on Nihoa only has between 300 and 700 birds.
