Hawai‘i has more species of these flies than anywhere else on Earth. Picture-winged flies are sometimes up to 5 times the size of their mainland cousins. This very rare species is known only from a few populations on the Big Island in association with a rare palm. It is named for the well-known Hawaiian nature photographer, Bill Mull, who discovered it on his birthday..
