This is Hawai‘i’s state bird. It is making a successful comeback after being reduced to only 30–50 known individuals in the 1940s. It occurs naturally on the Big Island (primarily around Kïlauea Crater), but has been released on Maui and Kaua‘i in hopes that their populations will increase once again.
