Found on all the main islands of Hawai‘i (rare on O‘ahu) in grasslands and shrublands, this endemic owl feeds mostly on mice and rats but they can also prey on small birds and large insects. It is active in daytime as well as at night. It is sometimes confused with the introduced barn owl but can be distinguished from it by it being streaked with brown; the barn owl is light tan in color and larger in size).
