Scientific name: Schiedea verticillata

Hawaiian Name: —

Classification: Phylum: Dicotyledonae. Family: Caryophyllaceae.

Origin: Endemic.

Status: Endangered.

Distribution: Nihoa.

Map: --

Discovered in 1923, this plant is only found on Nihoa in the costal cliff zone in cranks and soil pockets, sometimes in association among lichen-encrusted rocks. It has been listed as endangered since 1996 and is know from upwards of 350 individuals, all restricted to two valleys on the island.

The flowers lack petals and the plants die back to an enlarged fleshy root during the dry season.
