Trematolobelia / koli‘i
Scientific name: Trematolobelia macrostachys
Hawaiian Name: koli‘i
Classification: Class: Dicotyledonae. Family: Campanulaceae
Status: Reduced populations.
Distribution: Lana‘i and the Big Island.
The "lobelioid" plant has a unique "shaker" fruit that permits seeds to be released on dry days and protected on rainy ones. It is found in wet conditions on windswept cliffs and ridges, and when numbers of plants are in flower makes a spectacular showing!
