Scientific name: Megalagrion xanthomelas

Hawaiian Name: Pinapinao

Classification: Phylum: Arthropoda. Class: Insecta. Order: Odonata. Family: Coenagrionidae

Origin: Endemic.

Status: Reduced populations.

Distribution: O`ahu (one population left), Moloka`i, Lana`i, Maui, Big Island.

These insects used to be common throughout the islands, but introductions of mosquitofish (see No. 42) and other alien predators have reduced their numbers. Some can still be found in stream ecosystems in the more pristine rainforests at higher elevations.
