Homepage / Checklist of families
Anthomyzids are small, slender acalypterate flies found in nearly all parts
of the world. There are about 50 species of living and fossil taxa that
have been described. Adults of extant forms can be found in moist grassy
areas. Larvae have been reported from the leaf sheaths of various grasses
and sedges, fungi, and decaying plants, but are apparently not of much economic
importance.
Two genera from Baltic amber were originally ascribed to the Anthomyzidae:
Xenanthomyza Hennig and Protanthomyza Hennig (Hennig, 1965,
1967b). Vockeroth (1987) expressed some doubt that these two belonged to
the Anthomyzidae. One genus has subsequently been transferred to other families
leaving Protanthomyza as the only known Baltic amber representative
of the family.
