Family APYSTOMYIIDAE

The enigmatic little flies of the family Apystomyiidae were once thought to belong to the Bombyliidae but actually have closer affinities to empidoid families. Pape et al. (2011) placed it in its own Superfamily Apystomyoidea in the Eremoneura. It is only known in the extant fauna from one species from southern California in the genus Apystomyia Melander. It is known from five times more species in the fossil amber fauna. Grimaldi & Cumming (1999) described 5 species in the extinct genus Hilarimorphites from Cretaceous ambers of Burma and New Jersey.
