Family
ATELESTIDAE
Atelestidae are small (2–3
mm) grayish flies. Extant species have a disjunct distribution, being found in
both the Holarctic and southern Neotropical regions (Chile). Nothing is known
of the immature biology. Adults are found in grassy areas or patches of herbs.
The family is known in the fossil record from 11 species in 8 genera. The south
African Cretaceous fossil Pseudacarterus Waters, despite the atelestid-sounding
name, is a primitive hybotid and treated in this
catalog as such.
