Family CYPSELOSOMATIDAE

Cypselosomatidae have been considered either as a subfamily of Pseudopomyzidae or a separate family. The family as treated here consists of three genera (two extant; one fossil). Interestingly, the extant genera are known only from the Indo-Australian Region (a markedly southerly distribution) whereas the fossil genus is known only from Baltic amber in the Northern Hemisphere.

Little is known of the biology of extant forms. Larvae have been recorded from the guano of bent-wing bats in Australia (McAlpine, 1966).

Ref.: McAlpine (1966, classification and biology).
