Family ELLIIDAE

The family Elliidae was recently erected for two genera of extinct fossil flies known only from the Mesozoic. The genus Ellia (Krzeminska, Blagoderov & Krzeminski, 1993) has been found in the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary layer in Mongolian deposits and also the Lower Cretaceous of the Transbaikal in Siberia. Polyanka Krzeminska, Blagoderov & Krzeminski is known from Upper Jurassic deposits in Kazakhstan.

The phylogenetic placement of the Elliidae is postulated by Krzeminska et al. (1993) as being the sister-group to the Perissommatidae, Axymyidae, and Thaumaleidae, based primarily on venational characters.

Ref.: Krzeminska et al. (1993, review and phylogeny of taxa).
