Family GNOMUSCIDAE

 

 

This family (based on the genus Gnomusca Shcherbakov) was originally proposed as the subfamily Gnomuscinae in the Limoniidae (Shcherbakov et al., 1995). It was then said to possibly not be a dipteran but was removed from the Limoniidae and placed in the Trichopteromorpha (Krzeminski & Kzreminska, 2003). It was most recently treated as a family in Diptera by Grimaldi & Engel (2005), which is how it is treated here.
