Catalog of fossil Diptera of the world (Version 2.0) - Neal L. Evenhuis

Homepage / Checklist of families

Family LIMONIIDAE

Limoniids share many characteristics with tipulids, but are normally smaller in size, though exceptions occur. The family is found worldwide with more than 10,500 species having been described (Pape et al. 2011). In extant forms, immatures are found in aquatic or semiaquatic environments where they feed on decaying plant matter, fungi, and algae. Adult males of certain species may swarm. In 1994, 324 species were recorded as fossils. This revised catalog lists more than 450 species in almost 100 genera, an increase of 28% in species-group taxa in just 20 years.

In addition to the records below, other records include material from the Miocene of Sado Island Japan (Fujiyama, 1985: 37), a possible new genus close to Pseudolimnophila Alexander and Eutonia Wulp from the Paleocene of Alberta, Canada (Wighton, 1982: 578), and two specimens probably representing new genera from the Lower Cretaceous deposits of the Koonwarra Fossil Bed, Australia (Jell & Duncan, 1986: 169).

Refs.: Meunier (1906f, revision of amber taxa); Scudder (1894, review of North American fossils); Alexander (1931, review of Baltic amber taxa).

Genus ANTOCHA Osten Sacken

*TAPHROPHILA Rondani, 1856: 185. Type species: Limnobia inusta Meigen, 1818 [misidentification], by original designation.

*ANTOCHA Osten Sacken, 1860: 219. Type species: Antocha saxicola Osten Sacken, 1860, by subsequent designation of Coquillett (1910: 508).
[In the interest of stability and in accordance with usage, the name Antocha is here retained for species in this genus, whereas Hutson & Vane-Wright (1969) recommend to consider Taphrophila as senior synonym of Antocha. The original type designation of Taphrophila is based on a misidentification while the description of Taphrophila refers to characters typical of Antocha. In this case, a subsequent type-designation is required. Acceptance of the original (misidentified) type species of Taphrophila cannot be recommended because it would result in Taphrophila becoming a junior synonym of Limonia and a senior synonym of Atypophthalmus. See OÕHara et al. (2011) for further details.]
