Homepage / Checklist of families
Family MYCETOPHILIDAE
Mycetophilids (fungus gnats) are common nematocerous
medium-sized flies found worldwide. The adults of extant forms occur primarily
in damp, shady places such as forests, along streams, in caves, under boulders,
and nests of mammals, sometimes in very large numbers. Larvae are primarily
mycophagous, feeding on hyphae and spores of fungi in which they live. Some
spin silken webs and are predaceous or feed on mosses and liverworts.
The family Mycetophilidae is one of the most frequently
encountered families in the fossil Diptera record. This catalog records 397 species-group taxa in 126 genera. Most
species listed here are described from the Tertiary, especially the Eocene
Baltic amber. However, some taxa, e.g., Prodocidia Whalley and Sciophilopsis
Handlirsch have been described from Jurassic deposits. Pape et al. (2011) transferred all taxa in the
new family Huaxiasciaritidae Hong [an unavailable name] to Mycetophilidae, all
of which are based on Eocene amber species and genera from Fushun, China. All
available and unavailable names in Hong (2002a) are listed here.
In addition to the determined forms listed below, Vockeroth
in Matile (1981: 111) recorded undetermined material of this family from the
Upper Cretaceous amber of Canada, Fujiyama (1970: 71) illustrated and
discussed a poorly preserved specimen from the Miocene deposits of Iki Island, Japan, and there are unpublished records of the family from the Eocene Kishsnehn Formation of Montana, USA (D. Greenwalt, pers. comm.).
