Family DIXIDAE

Members of the family Dixidae, commonly called meniscus midges, are a cosmopolitan family of delicate nematocerous flies. Adults of extant forms do not feed and can be found resting on overhanging vegetation near the edges of streams and ponds in which the immatures live.

In addition to the determined material listed below, undetermined material has been recorded from the Lower Cretaceous Koonwarra Formation in southern Australia (Jell & Duncan, 1986) and the Miocene amber of the Dominican Republic (Poinar, 1992).

Refs.: Nowell (1951, world checklist, bibliography); Hennig (1966b, Baltic amber taxa).
