"Forget recess and learn math."

What he does

I conduct surveys for freshwater fish throughout the Hawaiian Islands for the Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR). I have also developed a Geographical Information System (GIS) fish survey database for the state of Hawaii. All of these fish survey sites will be on map online and it will show what and where the DAR has surveyed over the past 50 years.

How he got into science

I used to be in the military and I took some night classes in aquaculture from Dr. Bob Nishimoto. These classes sparked an interest in fisheries and I was fortunate enough to work on an ahi boat where I conducted line fishing for ahi and took data for the fisherman. Some of the ahi that we caught weighed in up to 200 pounds.

Favorite accomplishments

The opportunity to conduct stream survey work in the Hawaiian Islands with other researchers in my field.

In his free time

I like to play a round of golf when I have the time and occasionally like to go fishing.
