Primary Checklist

The following checklist includes 317 bird species documented as occurring in the Hawaiian Islands either naturally or through introduction and establishment of a viable breeding population for at least 15 years. Taxonomy and species order follow those of the American Ornithologists Union Checklist (1998) and supplements through 2009 (AOU 1999-2009), except in a few instances as documented in the species accounts. See the Hypothetical List for species reported in the Hawaiian Islands but not accepted to the Primary Checklist, and the Non-established List for non-native species reported in the wild that have not established viable breeding populations. Status codes are provided for the Hawaiian Islands as a whole as well as for the Northwestern and Southeastern Hawaiian Island groups separately; status codes for each island within these groups are obtained by clicking on the code for the island group. R - Resident (Endemic or Indigenous)
N - Naturalized (non-native) resident (established and breeding)
n - Naturalized (non-native) visitor (from another island or island group)
B - Breeding Visitor
M - Migrant through the islands (some may winter) or non-breeding visitor (often seabirds)
W - Winter Resident (some may migrate through the islands)
V - Vagrant
X - Extinct
x - Extirpated from that island or island group (Resident or Naturalized populations)
